Extrapolated Number of Hair Restoration Procedures Worldwide

An estimated 225,800 hair restoration procedures were performed worldwide in 2006 (a 34% increase from 2004)

  • In the United States, 100,445 hair restoration procedures were performed
  • In Canada, 12,625 hair restoration procedures were performed
  • In Mexico/Central & South America, 10,668 hair restoration procedures were performed
  • In Europe, 29,818 hair restoration procedures were performed
  • In Asia, 57,542 hair restoration procedures were performed
  • In Australia, 2,394 hair restoration procedures were performed
  • In the Middle East, 12,287 hair restoration procedures were performed

    • Estimated Hair Restoration Worldwide Market Size

    Based on the estimated number of 225,800 hair restoration procedures performed in 2006, multiplied by the average fee* charged to patients for a procedure, the estimated worldwide market for hair restoration was calculated as follows (expressed here in various currencies):

  • $1,238,162,024 USD (U.S. Dollars)
  • €914,692,195 (Euros)
  • $1,376,043,747 CAD (Canadian Dollars)
  • $1,488,753,637 AUD (Australian Dollars)

    • * The "average fee" charged for a procedure reported by survey participants and used in this calculation represents the overall average fee charged to all patients treated. Since the cost of procedures performed on individual patients may vary depending on the number of grafts and several other factors, the "average fee" as it related to this survey did not represent what all patients would expect to pay for a procedure, and should not be construed as a typical price for a hair restoration procedure.


    By Age and Gender

  • In 2006, 86.2% of all hair restoration surgical patients worldwide were male (down slightly from 88.6% in 2004)

    •  o Men in their 30s represent the largest group of male patients (31%)
     o Men in their 40s represent the second largest group of male patients (26%)
     o Men in their 20s represent the third largest group of male patients (17%)

  • In 2006, 13.8% of all hair restoration surgical patients worldwide were female (up slightly from 11.4% in 2004)

    •  o Women in their 40s represent the largest group of female patients (29%)
     o Women in their 30s represent the second largest group of female patients (26%)
     o Women in their 50s represent the third largest group of female patients (20%)

  • 71.8% of all non-surgical hair restoration patients worldwide were male in 2006
  • 28.2% of all non-surgical hair restoration patients worldwide were female in 2006
  • In 2006, more than half (57.9%) of all surgical hair restoration patients worldwide fell between the ages of 30 to 49 years old


    • Trends

    While nearly all (92.9%) hair restoration procedures performed in 2006 targeted the scalp area, hair restoration procedures performed in other areas of the body gained in popularity compared to 2004. These include:

  • Approximately 3.4% were performed on eyebrows (vs. 3% in 2004)
  • Approximately 1.5% were performed on facial areas, such as the moustache/beard (vs. 1% in 2004)
  • Approximately 1.4% were performed on eyelashes (vs. 0.35% in 2004)
  • Approximately 0.4% were performed on the pubic area (vs. 0.34% in 2004)
  • Approximately 0.2% were performed on the chest (vs. 0.06% in 2004)

    The objective of the survey was to gather reliable statistics with regard to the volume of hair restoration procedures performed, patient demographics, surgical techniques, treatments used, and other practice dynamics. The margin of error for the sample is plus or minus 6.5 % at the 95% confidence level.

    The ISHRS commissioned RH Research of Chicago, IL, to help develop the survey instrument, collect the data, analyze the findings, and prepare the summary report. RH Research is an independent survey research company specializing in surveys and statistical programs for professional societies and trade associations. All data collected from ISHRS members was kept completely confidential by RH Research.
