Female Pattern Baldness has a strong genetic predisposition although the mode of inheritance remains to be determined. There are many genes that contribute to this condition, and these genes could be inherited from either parent, or both. Genetic testing to assess risk of balding is currently not recommended, as it is unreliable. Currently, it is not clear if androgens (male sex hormones) play a role in FPHL, although androgens have a clear role in male pattern baldness. The majority of women with FPHL have normal levels of androgens in their bloodstream. Due to this uncertain relationship, the term FPHL is preferred to ‘female androgenetic alopecia’.
Female pattern baldness is actually hair thinning. Females generally do not have baldness pattern like men. They get hair thinning on top of their head.
By far, the most common reason for hair loss in women is genetics.
It is a progressive condition that needs to be slowed down with minoxidil and/or low level laser therapy. Hair transplantation is also an option for many women who have adequate donor area density. BOTH havest techniques are possible; though, one must be careful with FUE must be cartefully assessed since many women have lower-than-average donor densities. strio harvesting ususally provides significantly more density in women since more hair follicles and larger grafts can give women a more dense result. Be sure to evaluate ALL options; if your doctor cannot do so, ask him or her refer you for a more complete evauation and then you can decide to which doctor is best for you.
